William earned his B.A. in Theology & Religious Studies and Politics in 2013 from Saint Mary’s College of California. William graduated from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona and received a certificate in International Trade and Business Law. While attending law school, William studied abroad in Rhodes, Greece with Tulane University and the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law. William was a researcher for the Regulatory Science Consultative Service at the University of Arizona and participated in the Yaqui Human Rights Project as a student advocate. Garrick Gallagher joined the firm in 1988, and is a Shareholder, Director and Past President (2000-2006) of the firm. Mr. Gallagher earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1984, and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981.

Mr. Gallagher concentrates his practice on complex civil litigation, including insurance bad faith, insurance coverage, insurance coverage litigation, excess and surplus lines, directors and officers liability, personal injury, wrongful death, products liability, professional negligence, construction, and intellectual property litigation.

He regularly advises and represents parties in complex personal injury, insurance bad faith and primary/excess coverage matters. He is often hired to assist insurers with Arizona Damron and Morris Agreements involving stipulated judgments entered after denials of coverage or threatened to be entered when reservations of rights have been issued. Mr. Gallagher is frequently retained in high exposure cases and coverage disputes to manage risk and resolve difficult cases. His clients respect his ability to resolve matters efficiently.

Significant Representations

Mr. Gallagher is regularly retained as monitoring counsel for insurers in high exposure matters, including mass tort and property damage claims around the country. He represented the insurers as monitoring counsel in the West, Texas litigation arising out of a fertilizer plant explosion resulting in claims for over $500,000,000 in damages. He is also monitoring counsel for insurers in connection with the claims arising from the tragic 2017 shootings in Las Vegas.

Mr. Gallagher regularly represents parties in complex insurance coverage and bad faith litigation matters. In Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. Gallagher recovered a $5,950,000 verdict on behalf of U.S. Fire Ins. Co. in a bad faith failure to settle action against the primary insurance carrier. Mr. Gallagher represented the Insurer in insurance coverage litigation arising out of 16 class action suits seeking damages related to organic milk allegedly produced in violation of organic standards. He also represented the Insurer in insurance coverage litigation arising out of claims for $500 million in damages from alleged infringed copyrights or trademarks and appropriation of intellectual property.

In the Larry L. Hillblom probate case in Saipan, one of the largest and most litigious probate cases in the world, Mr. Gallagher successfully represented one of the heir claimants in securing the client’s share of the $600,000,000 estate.

Mr. Gallagher has evaluated liability, damages and coverage issues involving directors and officers claims involving allegations of mismanagement of assets and breaches of fiduciary duties, including claims arising out of the billion dollar collapse of Mortgages, Ltd.

In addition to regularly defending clients against multi-million dollar claims, he has recovered more than $100 million on behalf of clients in various jurisdictions.

As part of his insurance practice, Mr. Tate routinely provides advice and counseling on a broad spectrum of insurance coverage issues, including Damron/Morris agreements and other unique aspects of Arizona insurance law.  He understands the challenges of the insurance industry and provides sound, practical advice to help insurers navigate a continuously changing legal landscape.  His representation of insurers has involved everything from appraisals and coverage evaluations to bad faith litigation.

Mr. Tate’s construction practice focuses on mitigating and transferring risk for general contractors and subcontractors and litigating claims when necessary.  He has a demonstrated record of obtaining favorable results for his construction clients in complex and high-exposure cases.

Dillon Steadman is an associate at the firm, practicing primarily products liability, aviation liability, and professional liability.

Dillon earned his law degree from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, where he was on the Dean’s List and won the award for Outstanding Performance in Legal Writing.  Dillon was the Senior Articles Editor of the Arizona Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, which published his article on the purchase of homes proving to be former methamphetamine laboratories.

During law school, Dillon tried DUI cases before Tucson juries through the University’s prosecution clinic in partnership with the City of Tucson.  Dillon also provided volunteer legal services to clients in need of family law help through Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s domestic relations clinic.  Also during law school, Dillon helped startup businesses with their intellectual property needs through the IP clinic and worked for TechLaunch Arizona to evaluate patentability of inventions generated by University students and professors.

Before law school, Dillon earned a B.S. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a B.A. in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Arizona.  As an undergraduate, Dillon played several intramural sports, winning championships in volleyball and soccer, and studied embryonic development in the cellular biology laboratory.  Dillon is fluent in Spanish and conversant in French and Portuguese.

Steve Sparks handles complex civil litigation matters with an emphasis on product liability, insurance coverage, insurance bad faith, personal injury, toxic tort (asbestos/benzene), professional liability, and liquor liability. Mr. Sparks joined Sanders & Parks in 1995 and he currently serves as the firm’s Vice President. He has previously served in other positions on Sanders & Parks’ Executive Committee and he is a shareholder and director of the firm.

Mr. Sparks has earned Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV® PreeminentTM rating and has been honored by AVVO (a peer-reviewed professional organization) with its highest rating – Superb Rated Attorney. Mr. Sparks has also been awarded the Client’s Choice Award by AVVO. He is licensed to practice law in both Arizona and California and maintains an active practice in both jurisdictions.

He is regularly called upon to litigate claims arising out of alleged occupational and/or non-occupational exposures to asbestos-containing products and allegations of disease, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. Such claims involve a wide array of products, including brake linings and other friction material, valves, pumps, gaskets and household products.

Mr. Sparks is a seasoned trial attorney with a diverse practice involving matters of product liability (e.g., off-road vehicles, pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, asbestos-containing products), personal injury and wrongful death, premises liability, public entity issues, and professional negligence, including lawyer, agent/broker and accountant/tax advisor malpractice. Mr. Sparks has defended accounting, legal and tax professionals in claims alleging nearly $100 million in damages stemming from the implementation of allegedly deficient tax advice.  He is currently very active in the opioid litigation on behalf of a major opioid drug manufacturer.

Mr. Sparks also serves as general counsel for a number of businesses throughout the State of Arizona and provides advice and representation on business-related issues including transactional matters, contract drafting/review and employment disputes.

Mr. Sparks is licensed to practice in the State of Arizona and the State of California. While concentrating his practice on a broad range of tort litigation matters, Mr. Smith’s practice emphasizes defending product liability claims involving manufacturers accused of causing personal injury or property damage as a result of a manufacturing, design or warning defect in a product. This includes warranty and Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act litigation. Mr. Smith has defended numerous manufacturers over the years including vehicle manufacturers, appliance manufacturers, and manufacturers of component parts whose part is alleged to have caused the personal injury or property damage. Mr. Smith has represented manufacturers in nearly every significant manufacturing market including small and medium size manufacturing companies to fortune 500 manufacturing companies, and has successfully defended cases with damage claims in excess of seven figures.

Mr. Sandstrom earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Creighton University School of Law with honors, where he was the recipient of the Dean’s Academic Scholarship, the Werner-Robertson Scholarship, and the Lillis, William and Kathleen Scholarship.  During law school, Mr. Sandstrom was a member of the Creighton Law Review Board of Editors, as well as a member of the National Trial Team, National Arbitration Team, and National Moot Court Team.  He was the Champion of the Creighton Trial Competition, and a Regional Finalist in the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition.

After law school, Mr. Sandstrom received the American Board of Trial Advocates Award in recognition of excellence in trial skills.  He also received the David A. Svoboda Award in recognition of outstanding oral advocacy and trial skills.  Mr. Sandstrom is an Associate Author and Editor of the Arizona Tort Law Handbook, and frequently publishes law review and trade journal articles on various aspects of insurance law.

As a former insurance salesman and in-house attorney with one of the largest insurance underwriters in the United States, Mr. Sandstrom has a unique and thorough understanding of insurance law.

As part of her insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, Jasmina represents insurers in complex insurance coverage actions. Jasmina analyzes coverage under a wide variety of policies including commercial general liability, commercial property, professional liability, director and officer liability, aviation liability, commercial auto, garage liability, educators’ liability, managed care liability, homeowners, public entity liability, and excess policies.

Jasmina is also regularly retained by insurers that are faced with an assignment of rights, covenant not to execute and resulting consent/stipulated judgments (referred to as Damron/Morris agreements in Arizona) and the unique legal issues that arise when defending against the enforceability of those agreements.  Jasmina’s extensive knowledge and experience with Arizona law on consent judgments, gives her a particular ability to counsel clients in these cases, which typically involve complex coverage issues, bad faith allegations, and issues relating to enforceability of the consent/stipulated judgments.  Jasmina has successfully litigated cases involving numerous multi-million-dollar stipulated judgments resulting from Damron and Morris agreements, obtaining favorable results for the insurers in each.

Jasmina is also regularly retained as monitoring/coverage counsel on complex claims involving excess insurance and large loss litigation throughout the southwest states.  She regularly serves as legal counsel in cases where consent judgments are anticipated to assist in navigating coverage issues and policy limit demands to resolve cases favorably and avoid a consent judgment altogether.  Jasmina is also retained by public entities and insurers to provide counsel on risk transfer strategies and to ensure that all available coverage and indemnity obligations are triggered in cases where there are complicated contractual and additional insured issues.

Jasmina manages all aspects of her cases from depositions, to alternative dispute resolution, and on through trial.  She argues regularly before state trial and appellate courts as well as United States District Court.

Jasmina received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Pennsylvania State University. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law where she graduated with Honors in 2005.

Jasmina was named to the Southwest Super Lawyers-Rising Stars List every year from 2012 to 2018. She served on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Association of Defense Counsel (“AADC”), and was the Chair of its Professional Liability Committee. She is also the Vice President on the board of directors for the Arizona chapter of CLM and is actively involved as a member of CLM’s Insurance Coverage, Extra-Contractual and Professional Liability Committees.  Jasmina is currently the author of CLM’s Insurance Coverage Wiki Project for Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada, which provide an overview of important insurance coverage topics in those states.  She is also the author of CLM’s Extra-Contractual Wiki Projects for Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, which provide an overview of important topics in bad faith litigation in those states.

Able to assist clients in the boardroom as well as the courtroom, Mr. Glady has won the confidence of his clients by addressing legal challenges and disputes ranging from realizing business opportunities to resolving claims for personal injuries. He has accomplished that result by bringing keen legal insight as well as common sense to each new legal challenge, as well as an abiding concern for each client’s unique situation.

His experience extends to matters that touch upon most aspects of businesses, from formation to protection of assets to contractual issues to employment concerns to dispute resolution. He brings a technical background and understanding that is especially useful for entities and individuals whose business interests include innovation. And his knowledge and understanding of the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights provide all clients with the security that their assets will profit them without interference by third parties.

Mr. Glady’s practice has also includes extensive experience in the courtroom. He has represented both corporate and individual clients in state and federal courts, as well as before state and federal regulatory and administrative agencies. Matters he has handled run the gamut from airplane and other vehicle mishaps to insurance disputes to product liability claims to fights over contract obligations. He has been involved in patent and trademark litigation, business divorces, environmental disputes, and employment claims. He has tried cases to juries and judges, but also resolved cases early on when appropriate. A dogged advocate for his clients, he also understands his role as advisor as well, so that each client dispute in which he gets involved is handled in a way to serve the client’s best interests.

Insurance Coverage:
Mr. Glady is highly experienced and respected regarding insurance coverage matters. He has been involved with insurance coverage matters for almost 30 years. He acts as national counsel for a New York based insurance company for all of its environmental coverage matters. He has acted as a lead counsel in a coverage dispute involving over a billion dollars of claims. He has been asked by numerous national, international and foreign companies to assist with insurance matters. He has also been asked to assist with insurance language drafting. Because of his work with policies ranging back to the 1920s, he has amassed a significant body of knowledge and documents regarding the evolution of policy language and its interpretation that assists clients seeking to understand how policy language applies to any set of facts. Mr. Glady’s practice is not limited to representing insurers, as he has also assisted many policyholders in successfully presenting claims to insurers. He also assists both insurers and insureds when claims of bad faith arise and are litigated. He is a regular lecturer on insurance issues for businesses, professional and the construction industry.

Representative Matters:

  • Acted as a lead counsel in a coverage dispute between a Fortune 100 company and its insurers regarding a billion dollars’ worth of claims at sites around the United States and territories. Matter settled on very favorable terms for the insurer.
  • Represented an insurer involving over 1600 individual injury claims arising from alleged exposure to toxic substances. Matter settled on very favorable terms for the insurer.
  • Represented an entity going through reorganization in its claim against its Directors and Officers insurer. Obtained a settlement for twice the policy limit.
  • Represented an insurer in a lawsuit involving alleged medical malpractice aboard a medical transport aircraft. Matter settled on very favorable terms for the insurer.
  • Represented a religious organization in a coverage dispute with multiple carriers over alleged abuse claims. Matter settled for coverage at full limits.
  • Represented a major insurer in a significant coverage lawsuit with a developer over alleged construction defects. Matter settled on very favorable terms for the insurer.
  • Assisted a carrier in its revision of its liability policies to plain language versions.
  • Advises and represents insurers regarding asbestos claims.
  • Advises and represents insurers and businesses regarding insurance issues related to the construction industry.

Aviation:

Over his career, Mr. Glady’s background as an Aerospace/Mechanical engineer has equipped him to conduct significant legal work for aviation clients. He has represented manufacturers, airlines, retailers, repair stations, storage yards, owners, and pilots in compliance and litigation matters. Much of this work has been complex tort and commercial litigation, including multi-state and wrongful death claims. Mr. Glady has also represented airports in various matters, including safety, security, operational and environmental issues.

As the development and use of unmanned aerial vehicles (“UAVs”) (also called “drones”) has skyrocketed, Mr. Glady has been asked to advise and represent clients on issues ranging from licensing/compliance to potential liability to proper usage. Mr. Glady has also been called upon by a number of groups and organizations to teach their members about federal rules and regulations governing UAVs, as well as discuss potential future uses and the legal issues such uses might involve. Mr. Glady constantly monitors UAV innovation to keep himself and his clients up-to-date on the many entrepreneurial opportunities that promise to dramatically change many aspects of life and commerce.

  • Successful defense of airliner manufacturer for passenger wrongful death and injury claims related to New Zealand crash.
  • Successful defense of small aircraft manufacturer after crash at Scottsdale Airport.
  • Successful defense of component manufacturer against wrongful death claims brought in connection with Turkish crash of police helicopter.
  • Favorable result from defense of fixed base operator after fatal crash of light aircraft.
  • Representation of airline after fatal crash in Denver.
  • Representation of airline after fatal crash in Dallas.
  • Successful defense of airport in personal injury claim involving passenger boarding plane.
  • Successful representation of aircraft storage yard after subsequent failure of component returned to service from storage.
  • Favorable result from defense of pilot before the FAA.
  • Favorable result from representation of Tucson Airport in alleged police abuse case.
  • Part of legal team assisting the City of Phoenix with the airport people mover project.

Patent:

Mr. Glady has conducted patentability and clearance searches, prepared patent applications and worked with inventors in obtaining patent protection for their ideas.  Mr. Glady counsels clients regarding IP matters and works with inventors, entrepreneurs and companies to investigate and obtain when appropriate patent, trademark and copyright protection.  He also assists clients in the enforcement of intellectual property rights, obtaining injunctions and judgments when justified.  He has also successfully defended individuals and companies improperly charged with violations of intellectual property rights of others.

Representative matters:

  • Obtained and successfully enforced a patent involving a flexible fueling neck for automobiles.
  • Successfully defended a large warehouse club and a utility knife manufacturer against patent infringement claims involving another manufacturer who had never previously lost an enforcement action.
  • Successfully enforced patent rights regarding a backyard pool design, including payment of past damages and the preparation of a license for future sales.
  • Successfully defended a large corporation against patent infringement claims involving Y2K issues.
  • Successfully enforced patents rights for an inventor whose business partners attempted to take his rights away.
  • Successfully prosecuted a trademark and trade secret case against a former employee of a large Phoenix door retailer and installer.
  • Successfully defended an aftermarket auto parts manufacturer against claims of trademark and trade dress infringement.
  • Successfully enforced trademark and copyright rights involving a national seafood restaurant chain.
  • Represented software designer in licensing negotiations.

Environmental:

Mr. Glady has extensive experience handling toxic tort and environmental litigation cases. Some representative matters include:

  • A groundwater pollution case involving a large municipal water supply and 1800+ plaintiffs seeking $35 million dollars. The case settled for pennies on the dollar
  • Pollution matters involving airports around the country
  • Leaking UST’s associated with gas stations
  • Glady represented the City of Phoenix for a number of condemnation matters where the city had to deal with assorted businesses that had contaminated soil and water through the release of fuel, solvents and chemicals
  • He has handled cases involving the TCE plumes in Scottsdale and Phoenix
  • He has worked with clients on matters involving allegations of improper disposal of toxic materials, such as asbestos pipes, paint sludge and car batteries

Ms. Burgess is an experienced trial attorney who emphasizes health care, medical malpractice, product liability, professional liability, employment law, personal injury and municipal liability in her practice. She has tried cases in state and federal courts, on issues ranging from complex medical negligence claims, to police use-of-force and constitutional claims, and has argued appeals in Arizona’s Appellate and Supreme courts, and before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2013 she prosecuted a murder-for-hire case as a special prosecutor for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office resulting in a conviction on all counts, and in 2014 she prosecuted a high profile fraud matter, also as a special prosecutor. She serves as a Judge Pro Tem in the Maricopa County Superior Court, and also acts as a mediator for settlement conferences.

In the healthcare field, Ms. Burgess counsels and represents individual physicians and chiropractors, as well as hospitals, group homes, behavioral health providers, nurses and paramedics. In addition to litigation, she handles representation of healthcare providers before their licensing boards and provides counseling to clients to help them avoid litigation when possible. Ms. Burgess also regularly represents public entities, in various tort and civil rights litigation matters. She has handled cases involving public transit, accident, roadway design, police and detention officers’ use of force, civil rights, employment, personal injury, prison break and wrongful death claims for various municipalities. She has been an expert witness regarding notice of claim issues.

Ms. Burgess, a firm Shareholder and Director since 2000, is a member of Sanders & Parks’ management team, serving as the firm’s Secretary/Treasurer. She earned her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, in 1991. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies, cum laude, from Wellesley College, in 1988. While at Georgetown, she was a member of the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics. She was admitted to practice law in the State of Virginia in 1991, and Arizona in 1993. Following law school, Ms. Burgess was an associate attorney in Washington, D.C., where she focused on health care and corporate transactional practice. Before joining Sanders & Parks, she spent a year as Judicial Clerk with the Honorable Susan A. Ehrlich of the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One. She is licensed to practice law before the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth and Ninth Circuits.

Ms. Burgess has been recognized for her legal skills by her peers. Since 2013, she has been selected as a “Super Lawyer” in the area of healthcare law, and has been named to Arizona’s Top 50 Lawyers since 2015. Since 2014 she has also been selected as one of Arizona’s top 25 women attorneys.
