Robert Beardsley is an associate with the firm, practicing in the areas of medical malpractice, construction defect, personal injury and municipal liability. His primary focus is defending doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers in malpractice cases. As a former prosecutor, he is an experienced trial lawyer. He has completed over 35 trials to verdict, most of which were complex and often high-profile felony cases involving child or intimate partner abuse and homicide. In 2019, he tried two such first-degree murder trials. In both cases the juries returned verdicts of guilt for all charged counts. Mr. Beardsley has significant experience presenting complex medical testimony to lay jurors. He has been a featured speaker to several multi-disciplinary panels on the topics of felony domestic violence, strangulation, witness recantation and trial advocacy. While in law school, Mr. Beardsley completed a judicial externship clerking for the Honorable Thomas D. Ferraro in the United States District Court and was awarded the Law College Association Scholarship for academic merit.

  • Haught v. Sharma et al.: Mr. Eaves defended his clients in this month-long medical malpractice trial.  Plaintiffs asked for more than $16 million in damages during closing arguments.  The jury returned a defense verdict in favor of Mr. Eaves’ clients.
  • Elmore v. Thygerson; Mr. Eaves defended his client in a 3-week, medical malpractice, wrongful death, jury trial.  The jury returned a defense verdict in favor of Mr. Eaves’ client.
  • Heinemann v. Dacanay; Mr. Eaves defended his client in a 3-week, medical malpractice, jury trial. Plaintiffs settled the day before closing arguments.
  • State v. Rozenman; Mr. Eaves was appointed as special prosecutor in this Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder case which went to a 9-week jury trial.  The jury convicted the defendant who was sentenced to life in prison.
  • Milke v. Maricopa County; Mr. Eaves represents Maricopa County in this wrongful conviction case in which the Plaintiff claims she was wrongfully sent to death row for the murder of her 4 year old son.

  • Eaves was recognized by the Chief of the Phoenix Police Department for his efforts in targeting and prosecuting some of the toughest gangs in the City of Phoenix.

Steve Sparks handles complex civil litigation matters with an emphasis on product liability, insurance coverage, insurance bad faith, personal injury, toxic tort (asbestos/benzene), professional liability, and liquor liability. Mr. Sparks joined Sanders & Parks in 1995 and he currently serves as the firm’s Vice President. He has previously served in other positions on Sanders & Parks’ Executive Committee and he is a shareholder and director of the firm.

Mr. Sparks has earned Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV® PreeminentTM rating and has been honored by AVVO (a peer-reviewed professional organization) with its highest rating – Superb Rated Attorney. Mr. Sparks has also been awarded the Client’s Choice Award by AVVO. He is licensed to practice law in both Arizona and California and maintains an active practice in both jurisdictions.

Mr. Sparks is frequently called upon to handle complex insurance coverage and bad faith matters for insurance carriers. He has considerable experience providing coverage advice and litigating insurance law matters arising out of commercial, homeowners, automobile and workers’ compensation policies. He also represents insurers in connection with Damron and Morris Agreements under Arizona law. Mr. Sparks also routinely represents insurance agents and brokers in professional negligence claims. For many years, Mr. Sparks has led a team of Sanders & Parks attorneys in defending complex asbestos litigation matters for a wide variety of national and international product manufacturers and suppliers, as well as premises owners and employers. He is regularly called upon to litigate claims arising out of alleged occupational and/or non-occupational exposures to asbestos-containing products and allegations of disease, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. Such claims involve a wide array of products, including brake linings and other friction material, valves, pumps, gaskets and household products.

Mr. Sparks is a seasoned trial attorney with a diverse practice involving matters of product liability (e.g., off-road vehicles, pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, asbestos-containing products), personal injury and wrongful death, premises liability, public entity issues, and professional negligence, including lawyer, agent/broker and accountant/tax advisor malpractice. Mr. Sparks has defended accounting, legal and tax professionals in claims alleging nearly $100 million in damages stemming from the implementation of allegedly deficient tax advice.  He is currently very active in the opioid litigation on behalf of a major opioid drug manufacturer.

Mr. Sparks also serves as general counsel for a number of businesses throughout the State of Arizona and provides advice and representation on business-related issues including transactional matters, contract drafting/review and employment disputes.

Mr. Sparks is licensed to practice in the State of Arizona and the State of California. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, District of Arizona, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, U.S. District Court, Central District of California and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. Burgess is an experienced trial attorney who emphasizes health care, medical malpractice, product liability, professional liability, employment law, personal injury and municipal liability in her practice. She has tried cases in state and federal courts, on issues ranging from complex medical negligence claims, to police use-of-force and constitutional claims, and has argued appeals in Arizona’s Appellate and Supreme courts, and before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2013 she prosecuted a murder-for-hire case as a special prosecutor for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office resulting in a conviction on all counts, and in 2014 she prosecuted a high profile fraud matter, also as a special prosecutor. She serves as a Judge Pro Tem in the Maricopa County Superior Court, and also acts as a mediator for settlement conferences.

In the healthcare field, Ms. Burgess counsels and represents individual physicians and chiropractors, as well as hospitals, group homes, behavioral health providers, nurses and paramedics. In addition to litigation, she handles representation of healthcare providers before their licensing boards and provides counseling to clients to help them avoid litigation when possible. Ms. Burgess also regularly represents public entities, in various tort and civil rights litigation matters. She has handled cases involving public transit, accident, roadway design, police and detention officers’ use of force, civil rights, employment, personal injury, prison break and wrongful death claims for various municipalities. She has been an expert witness regarding notice of claim issues.

Ms. Burgess, a firm Shareholder and Director since 2000, is a member of Sanders & Parks’ management team, serving as the firm’s Secretary/Treasurer. She earned her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, in 1991. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies, cum laude, from Wellesley College, in 1988. While at Georgetown, she was a member of the Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics. She was admitted to practice law in the State of Virginia in 1991, and Arizona in 1993. Following law school, Ms. Burgess was an associate attorney in Washington, D.C., where she focused on health care and corporate transactional practice. Before joining Sanders & Parks, she spent a year as Judicial Clerk with the Honorable Susan A. Ehrlich of the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One. She is licensed to practice law before the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth and Ninth Circuits.

Ms. Burgess has been recognized for her legal skills by her peers.
